AGI
Artificial General Intelligence
A hypothetical AI matching or exceeding human ability across most cognitive tasks, not just narrow ones. Today's systems are “narrow” — superhuman at one thing, useless at others. No agreed definition exists, which is why “are we close to AGI?” debates rarely resolve.
Concrete example
A system that could write your code, argue a court case, and plan your week equally well doesn't exist yet — that would be AGI.
Why it matters
The goalpost the major labs claim to chase — and the justification for enormous funding rounds.
